Tetracycline is a medication that is used to treat a wide variety of infections, including those caused by acne. It is an antibiotic that works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria on the surface of the skin. This antibiotic is only effective against bacterial infections. It will not be effective against viral infections (such as common cold, flu). Antibiotics that are used when they are not needed can cause them to become ineffective for future infections. When used in conjunction with anti-ulcer medications, tetracycline can be effective in the treatment of certain types of stomach ulcers.
